Cybersecurity: challenges exacerbated by a turbulent macro environment.
Digital transformation, and with it the massive adoption of the Cloud, has strengthened and densified the interconnections between the information systems of businesses and local authorities on the one hand, and their ecosystem of third parties on the other, with one important corollary: the multiplication of vulnerabilities.
Rebound attacks regularly make the headlines. Cybercriminals exploit the weaknesses of less protected third parties (who are less mature about the challenges of IT security) to attack large companies, bancassurance players and public authorities that store ‘marketable’ data. The consequences are legal, financial and reputational.
While the issue of cybersecurity was already crucial before the health crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic has undeniably exacerbated the risks and multiplied exposure for a number of reasons:
- The democratisation of teleworking and hybrid working, with all the vulnerabilities we know about less secure home networks, use of personal devices, public and unsecured connections, massive use of collaborative working solutions, etc. ;
- Taken by surprise by the scale of the health crisis, some companies and public authorities embarked on their digital transformation as a matter of urgency, sometimes neglecting the cybersecurity aspect in the name of business continuity;
- Sharp rise in phishing and ransomware attacks, particularly targeting teleworkers and small businesses;
- Pressure on healthcare infrastructures, which have been particularly targeted by cyber-attacks during the pandemic and beyond. These critical structures are considered by hackers to be more likely to pay ransoms. These attacks not only jeopardised the security of patient data but also disrupted the operations of hospitals and research centres;
- Increased reliance on online services: the pandemic has led to massive adoption of online services for shopping, banking, education and leisure. This growing dependence on digital services has naturally increased the risk of security breaches.
